Graffiti in Gurgaon

I remember straining my neck to catch sight of the fleeting images of back-to-back graffiti on long stretches of walls as the bus whizzed past them. Colourful tags (stylized signatures of the writers) and funky paintings, which made the drabbest of spots into a tourist attraction, was the first impression that graffiti made on my mind, from the window of that bus that drove us around Paris. I was reacquainted with it in Madrid and then again more recently in Kuala Lumpur, but little was I prepared to find an artist in Gurgaon painting my city in those very familiar strokes.

My hubby and I literally jumped out of our car when we noticed a wall with some amateurish graffiti, though with truckloads of attitude! For alongside the art, was a declaration – “Graffiti is art, not vandalism’ – and it was signed by the artist – Treble.  Clearly, Treble is aware that his art might not be appreciated by some people, especially the residents of the homes whose walls he is choosing to ‘decorate.’ But I’m sure most of you who drive around this DLF area, or even for that matter other residential areas in Gurgaon, would agree with me that walls with graffiti are way better than the ignored, unpainted and often dirty backsides of homes.

Treble isn’t a very good artist as yet, but a few more walls later, this guy/gal might just get better, and who knows he might get some competition too?

Check out the pictures Aman clicked of the graffiti we managed to spot in DLF Phase III, Gurgaon –

  1. Plenty of more walls to be clicked. You can invite artists and have an annual competition also. Its a great way to stop public menaces like spitting, urination, I am sure most residents wont mind it if you explain the advantages of it and if nothing else its plain art.
